Sustained Burning of Liquids

ASTM D4206 and 49CFR173 Appendix H

The determination of whether flammable vapor is given off by a liquid at a
specified temperature is called the “Sustained Burning” test. The test is
conducted in a small-scale open cup apparatus. The test is conducted at
a fixed temperature. The test temperature selected depends on the
requirement of the application standard. The test procedure specified in
ASTM D4206 calls for test to be conducted at 49 degrees C. U.S. Department
of Transportation guidelines for the packaging classification of liquids requires
determinations of sustained burning be conducted at 60.5 and 75 degrees C.
